Aidan-

I am sorry to hear about your favorite Professor passed away. I felt your pain as I lost a special friend too. I met him while I cycled in Tasmania. I became good friends with him and his family and also his motorcyle gang (a good gang). I looked forward to seeing them again but Bob the husband which he and I became very fast friend died a few years ago. He took me a ride on his bike...we laughed, teased and even danced together. He had a beautiful wife who was secured and confident. Bob and I were soul mate friends. Our friendship was pure. I was devastated when his wife wrote me a long letter to inform me about Bob's sudden death. Boy! I cried and cried all day and night. I understand how you feel about losing someone that you have a lot of respect for. We feel pain when we lose someone who made us feel very special. I hope you will get some support and enjoy on Thanksgiving. Thanks for sharing.

It was a really big shock to hear that Mike Kemp passed away. He was 60. I remember him when we were students at Gally in early 1970's. He seemed decent, friendly, and pleasant... He was only 60 so what happened?

A big loss for ASL and AIEP students and for those interested in international sign language studies... Your eulogy was very beautiful and emotional.

Dear Adian,

Thank you for telling us about Dr. Mike Kemp's recent death. I am shocked to hear the sad news! I do understand exactly how you feel about him as he was one of your favorite professors at Gallaudet University and he was not selfish to share his experience with Gallaudet students. Wow! He really cherished you as he always encouraged you to be successful. He had an excellent personality.

I do agree with you that some deaf professors always think a lot about themselves and they are very selfish. They should open their warm hearts to everyone.

I feel pain for you as my heart goes out to you. I hope you think positively to make you feel better soon. I do care a lot about you.

We have lost another ASL pioneer. They are becoming fewer. I hope (and I am sure he hopes, wherever he is), that there will be others of us who will come up to carry on his work and preserve ASL.

Aidan,

Don G. is right! We have lost two ASL pioneers within five years. Prof. Dr. Clayton Valli died when he was about 50ish of age. Now we
lost Prof. Dr. Mike Kemp. They were
fiercely fighting to save ASL in the USA as well as to spread sign
language in the four corners of the globe!

I remember Mike Kemp told us a story in class about the time when the President's motorcade suddenly appeared and President Lyndon Johnson stepped out of the car. He said he bravely stepped up near the President and put out has hand and used his deaf voice and said; "Hello, Mr. President!" and then the President shook his hand.

Aidan-

I re read my message and I want to clarify something here. Bob was not only special to me because I rode on a motorcycle with him and etc. My trip from Zeehan to Strahan, Tasmania was the most weirdest, frightening and pleasant. Many things happened to me on this specific route so when I met Bob and others I knew everything was going to be okay. It is a long story and I will save that for later. That is one of the main reasons why he was special to me. Thanks.

Do you know which newspaper that has Kemp's obituary? No mention in Washington Post. Nothing in the Gallaudet, Deaf Times, ASLTA websites... Mike Kemp must not be forgotten...

It grieved me when I just learned about the death of Dr. Mike Kemp - we were students together at Gallaudet College (1970's) and I enjoyed his article, Why is Learning ASL difficult? in American Annals of the Deaf. I always have my ASL students read his article and write their comments or opinions. His article had great impact on my students.
Can we find out what the cause of his death was? So Young and so much He could give us.
May the Lord be with his family and his ASL family!
