Aidan,

Your argument is very interesting! That, I am sure, makes us think harder about the terms of HA or CI instead of using deaf or Deaf.

In my Deafchipmunk blog, I have used only two words in Deafchipmunk website's letterhead. They are ASL and Deaf.

Deaf creates sign languages and cultures. Without deaf, there won't be sign languages, cultures, hearing aids, CI, and many other things. You are right that why do people have decided to reject the term of Deaf even though Deaf is very much part of us all. Deaf makes CI, HA, devices, VRS, MRS and interpreting services/corporates wealthy. Without Deaf, they are nothing and irrelevant! Even without hearing, they are nothing and irrelevant too because Deaf does not need them at all.

Once again thanks for bringing that up with us all...

Interesting approach to the issue of CI, invasive surgeries and societal perspectives of such, and colonization of the deaf...oops, CI-users. I have been noticing how people have been defining themselves by a piece of technology which is small enough to be hidden in hair.

Yay you are back! For a moment, I thought you were healing from the BI which may have explained that you were not active in vlogging but you surely got me fooled!! Love your straight-to-the-point vlog!

You know, it's funny I just made a vlog that will reveal how AG Bell's products (children who graduated) did not feel complete in mainstreaming program based on a survey. So I can say that AG Bell/Oral products lost in that area.

I wonder if the reasons why Lasik is banned for minors has to do with higher risks than CI or that seeing is not a mandatory part of the function as opposed to hearing and that it is replaceable; may it be Lasik, glasses or contact lens that will have almost similar outcomes whereas CI produces different outcomes than hearing aid for those who are profoundly deaf.

Nevertheless, you raised a good question making me to analyze the reasons for determining the differences between CI and Lasik when it comes to age requirement.

Aidan,

I must confess, I do love your vlogs - you're obviously a very smart woman with strong opinions. I have nothing but Respect for you.

It's interesting that you mentioned how some people who have CI refer to themselves as CI. I haven't really encountered that much - I still refer to myself as Deaf even though I do have a CI and I speak. I would say that there are some people with CI who do not interact with other Deaf people, therefore they don't really build an idnetity with the word "deaf."

It's not necessarily the parent's fault or whatnot. Perhaps the area just doesn't have that many deaf people. Also, the community in that area could be lacking in real Deaf role models (my hometown sure was lacking in that department!).

I would hesistae to label it as a superiority complex, but I can see how they can come off as 'superior' Ignorance always breeds misconceptions.

Well you certainly got my attention! It's interesting to know that other people have issues with the practice of implants as well.

Ha! I love your vlog. A perfect spin-off (from Raychelle's vlog).
I am tired of CI people claiming that CIs are simply tools. I am sure some women can say breast implants are simply tools (probably for men's pleasure), but should women enlarge their breasts to please men? Should Deaf do CI to please hearing people?
