Helen Beebe: Our Hero

I discussed why Helen Beebe is our hero because she worked so hard to cure Deaf children. She set up an AVT organization for Deaf children. Where is an ASL organization for Deaf children? Website Information: http://www.helenbeebe.org http://www.babysigns.com

Not for me .. I grew up with alot of speech trainings and many more. Still I missed out alot of things til I came to Gallaudet. My speech is pretty okay I think however it wasted my 19 years of being an lonely Deaf oralist in my hearing school. I am sure there are some benefits for others. Oh well.

You forgot Jay! :D

I agree, we could DO something about it.

I mean, it's good to talk about it, but also try to take actions as well - taking advantages of the readily resources we have, whether it be deaf people with various skills or the technology available to make this work.

And others could help by supporting with showing evidences of their deaf/hoh children succeeding in Bi/Bi approach, as well as successful deaf people running their own businesses and interviewing them.

Welcome to the dysfunctional world of linquistic minorities. :) Like you, I would like to see a long-term solution to spreading the ASL gospel among the mainstream.

I was watching you without distracting to others. I stayed on your vlog from the beginning to the end. True. Bi-Bi Now movement needs to act..... we need to "act" instead of "talking among the Deaf Community." You expressed very clearly concerning about our future Deaf Children.

Well... we badly need statistics, evidences, MORE published works, etc., that Bi-Bi philosophy works and that ASL is a solid real language. That would grab the government's balls and get it give us more rights and funds. Last spring I attended one lecture given by Dr. Kim Brown Kurtz (I think that was her last name...) and she said that we badly needed to develope more PUBLISHED works with STATISTICS to convince the govt... that the govt would care to listen to us... if we gave published statistics.

Plus we need BOTH educated deaf and I hate to say, hearing advocates for deaf people.

Right now there are many deaf people going for Ph.D.s and hopefully they intent to publish many works in the deaf education.

One more thing. Right now there are 27 schools for the deaf and deaf programs in the mainstream schools participating in the CAEBER... so CAEBER is working very hard.

Still it is not enough, due to the IDEA, LRE laws, etc... which give a lot of power to school districts and hearing parents (remember 90% of deaf children is born to the hearing parents.)

The researchers/teachers have to ask for permissions from their schools and from the parents of children to film/record the Bi-Bi methods being used on the children. Many schools are resistent, so it is a challenge, but it can be done.

Go for it.

Hi Aidan,

Love how you put this way in a sarcastic mode about Helen. I'm sorry that ds didn't get your point. You are not applauding speech therapy, you are just making an irony statement, get it, ds?

I just want to keep you in the loop that there are talks going on about forming a Bi-Bi or ASL for Deaf Children organization or whatever we want to call it where we are able to be readily available to provide the resources directly to parents the same way as they are informed about any other options. Parents have a right to options but we as a deaf community have a right to provide resources. It seems to me that this such organization that you pointed out are not in existent and influential enough to reach out to parents.

I have a very thick binder (4 inches) of collected research about Bi-Bi. It is all there but enough? Never! We need visual, concrete examples. Working with CAEBER representatives may be the key as well as they are kept updated. We also should keep in mind about contacting Carol Erting and Cynthia Bailes who were pioneers in Bi-Bi program. Also these original members from ISD as I am currently in contact. Yes folks the word is getting around and around that people are coming forward to form this such organization. You are on the right track!

Aidan, we got to talk. I no longer can sit anymore. I just admire your idea of every one of us who have the expertise in our area whereas we can contribute to make this work. We just got to try.

Michele, what do you mean by your question? Are you being doubtful that this will work? Can you elaborate why if you can play devil's advocate?
